Illegal Immigrants and the Impact on Public Health

There are many health concerns with the millions of illegal immigrants crossing the borders of the United States today. This is because of the lack of medical examinations, treatment, and sanitary education.

Many of the illegal immigrants who fail to legally go through the right process through immigration who come to the United States pose a health risk to other Americans. They often come over with dangerous diseases that can be contracted by other people. These diseases are contagious and have been controlled in the US but because of illegal immigrants it is making controlling disease even harder today. There are many third world diseases that have been brought to the United States from people coming over from Mexico like tuberculosis, leprosy, pork tapeworm, cycticercosis, and more. The problem is that the United States hasn’t seen some of these diseases in years and some don’t have treatments readily available. When illegal immigrants bring over their parasites and things like dysentery it can be devastating if it gets into the public water systems and the sewage plants.

The US immigration has a process for allowing immigrants into the United States. This process includes a full medical exam to ensure that no diseases or conditions are brought in. This is a way of protecting the people who are citizens from a large outbreak of disease from occurring. Most of the illegal immigrants who come over to the United States haven’t seen a doctor in years or maybe never in their lifetime. Many of them are contagious with some type of disease and this makes people very unsafe.

Another consideration is the emergency rooms in hospitals today. Many hospitals that are near the border of Mexico are packed with illegal immigrants in the emergency waiting rooms. This is because the hospitals won’t turn away a sick person who cannot pay so they get free medical care. The problem is that the citizens who come into the emergency room who need to wait for care are susceptible to catching these airborne diseases they are bringing across the border. If a sick individual goes into the emergency room bathroom and touches the bathroom vanity they have left their germs. The next person how has a sprained ankle that uses the bathroom and touches the vanity can now contract the deadly and contagious disease and spread it again. Emergency rooms are now dangerous places for Americans to go and wait to see a doctor.

There are many dangers to the American public health with the illegal immigrants sneaking into the United States from the borders of Mexico. The problem is that they are coming over by the thousands and it is not controlled. These immigrants are bringing over diseases like tuberculosis and dysentery that can spread like an epidemic and wipe out the population in as little as a few years. The process that the immigration department has in place to allow people to become citizens is there for a reason and that is to provide the safety of the people. Immigrants must have a medical exam before they come into the country.
